Join Our Movement
Come on! What are you waiting for? Let’s do this together.
We’ve already lived a half-century or longer!
Yes, we’ve seen and overcome a lot in our lifetimes! However, there is still a lot to do. While we are busy reinventing our careers and concept of work in semi-retirement, let’s not forget to remember to fight ageism whenever we can.
Yes, ageism is still alive—especially in the workforce.
While it is against the law, it is also a part of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 making it illegal to discriminate against a person on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity), or national origin. However, this does not prevent it from still happening. Whether you yourself have personally experienced ageism or you know someone who has, we can all try to do our part to expose it and to eliminate it.
What are some of the things that you can do?
For starts, you can:
- Report any known incidents to your employer’s human resources department or state’s labor department. If ignored, escalate it to the US EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission).
- Find out what your state’s elected officials are doing about workforce age discrimination in both your state’s senate and your state’s house of representatives.
- Join the AARP and the AARP Foundation to learn as much as you can about ageism and what is being done there.
- Get involved as a volunteer at the state level for your state’s AARP chapter.
- Become familiar with the work of the Encore Network and its job boards, podcasts, and volunteer resources.
- Sign up to join the Facebook Group entitled, “Working in Retirement” with fellow coach, Larry Steward, as he and I discuss this topic and others.
- Remember to vote in all elections.
- Consider going into business for yourself, like I did.
Together we can do this.
